Robotic surgery is an advanced form of minimally-invasive or laparoscopic (small incision) surgery where surgeons use a computer-controlled robot to assist them in certain surgical procedures. Historically, most common surgical procedures have been “open” procedures, meaning they are performed through one large incision. By contrast, the da Vinci Surgery System enables surgeons to perform minimally-invasive laparoscopic surgery through a few small incisions. More than 3 million successful surgical procedures have been performed using da Vinci, with more occurring every day, across the country*.
